The goals of this workshop were:

  • To identify worthwhile goals for future inter-disciplinary projects involving collaboration between technologists and music researchers and practitioners.
  • To raise awareness among leading music researchers and practitioners of the ways in which technology can (and cannot) be used to improve musical research and practice.
  • To raise awareness of the needs of music researchers and practitioners among leading technologists interested in developing systems to be used by them.

The workshop consisted of nine group discussions on a topic proposed by the chair of the discussion. These included:

  • Connecting the two cultures: how empirical does musicology need to be?
  • Aspiration vs. reality: opportunities and challenges in resource discovery
  • Using technology in music psychology research
  • Expanding the musician’s workshop: the effect of information technology on musical creativity

Each participant attended three of the group discussions during the day. Summaries of the group discussions will be available on this site in the next few months.
